When I put an album together, the song arrangement is key. Its also fun to weave the hills and valleys.
On the other hand, computers make it easy to hear out of order. when you hear deep album cuts first, you know who is false and who really tries. A good musician or band should probably be building towards something, We'd hope wouldn't we? A great example of using an entire album to achieve a artistic goal is Joni Mitchell. Her albums definitely start strong, but intellectually she builds. Song 1 serves as a introduction. If we're gonna sit here for 45 - 75 minutes and pay attention to you there oughta be a payoff, a destination perhaps. I don't think you have to be a 1973 concept album to build to something. I think its about respecting your audience's time.

I play without using picks. I got a little carried away playing BrainWash the other night. My fingers were bleeding while I played. Wouldn't have thought to do it on purpose, but it was dramatic.

so much emphasis is placed on the first 3 tracks these days. plenty of booking agents and music critics say they listen to the first 30 seconds of the first 3 tracks (at most) of any demo tape. If they aren't pulled in by what they hear, they stop listening. i think this has had a large effect on what you are talking about, the buildup. but of course, it does sound better when the album works as a whole, from beginning to end.
