If the weather cooperates and the rains come and go as fast as predicted we'll be going up to Fall Riv for the Narrows Festival of the Arts tomorrow afternoon. It's a small local affair, Eric Lindell, The Holmes Brothers, Carrie Rodriguez and Jim Lauderdale are among the Artists to perform.
This isn't the very first cut of "Skokiaan" aka "Isikhokiyana", but it's the 1954 hit version from what was then called Southern Rhodesia by Muparuwa and the Bulawayo Sweet Rhythms Band, that propelled the tune to international fame
Today, X-ray Spex (I know Poly Styrene and Paul Dan are in, I'm assuming Rudi Thompson, and no clue who else) will play at the Roundhouse in London. Part of me desperately wants to believe that it will be every bit amazing as X-Ray Spex was when they originally existed. The other part of me is terrified that it is goign to be a horrifying example of cashing. I'd still be there if I had any way of doing so. X-Ray Spex, for me, are one of those bands that when you first her... MORE
Personally, based on myself and friends, i have my doubts about this one:
Musical taste "defines personality"
(Reuters) Fans of classical music and jazz are creative, pop lovers are hardworking and, despite the stereotypes, heavy metal listeners are gentle, creative types who are at ease with themselves. So says Professor Adrian North of Scotland's Heriot-Watt University who has been studying the links between people's personalities and their choice of music. "People oft... MORE
I find it frustrating to find a new band (or the new band finds you) and I can't find the mp3's anywhere. Sucky. Out of the blue this mp3 appeared. I grabbed it up quick. Since then, nothing.
I feel like I'm discovering this band for the first time, even though I've listened to them occiasionally for years as a metal fan. Somehow getting my hands on the vast bulk of their material these past few days has lead me to get somewhat obsessed with them. Really, I'm not sure how I managed to function for so long without a regular dose of Motörhead-y goodness. My love of the filthiest of filthy rock 'n' roll should have almost naturally lead me to their doorste... MORE
Here's the title track off Jenny Lewis' upcoming solo album. So far I'm liking this a lot. What do you think? The album is out Sept. 23.
The Freshies are a rather obscure eighties punk band from Manchester, perhaps more well known for their lead singer's reincarnation as fibre-glass faced comedian Frank Sidebottom. They did however create what should be a timeless classic single amongst music junkies, detailing that infatuation we've all most likely felt towards an alluring music vendor. As a side note, although the song was originally called I'm in Love With A Girl on the Manchester Virgin Megastore ... MORE
So nobody rose to the challenge. Rawkkiddoh must be vacationing in Antarctica or something. My week has been really busy, so instead of giving hints and waiting longer, I'll move on. The track was "Hold Me In The River" by brakesbrakesbrakes, a band I've commented on here long ago (in fact, I think it may have been this track). Formed as The Brakes in the UK, they came to America only to find that we already had a "The Brakes," so would they please choose another nam... MORE
"We won't confess what we've done", begins Will Oldham, and suddenly my room is staring at me. The unmade bed, the spoiled food, the mess on the floor are all eyes on me like they know my secrets. Between us, one of those secrets is an answer to the question - what would you give for some profoundness in life? In the summer after I turned eighteen, I told my folks a huge lie. I said I was being sent to a sister university for extra writing courses. That it was all paid fo... MORE

dermahrk says: We are being overtaken by the Pod People - the Mog Music Network. Bloggers who don't post tunes or videos, have nothing to say and say it endlessly, and don't interact. They suck. I have to agree. We seem to be overrun of late by self-aggrandizing links to posts of little or no interest. (to be fair, some of them are very interesting), but the point is.....I guess its becoming depersonalized or something. So many provide links to their works of w... MORE
Taking you back to 1987. This band wasn't well known to the listening populace that tuned a radio. They were known in the clubs just a touch. Unfortunately, the lead singer, Peter J. Thomson, died in the late 1990's so no chance of a resurrection, so to speak.
A great tune that we had around the house when I was just a little tiny deadboydeadboy. My dad had very eclectic tastes. This song has a very interesting history and if anyone has the original, I'd like to hear it. Bill?
Yes, move it on over. Dermahrk has taken us back to the days of yore with his most excellent Jimmie Rodgers post So let's take a look around, see what comes up. >>>>"America’s Most Colorful Hillbilly Band", played a particular version of Country Boogie long before rocknroll was born. Essentially a covers band, they were popular at dance halls & clubs through-out the south & midwest. Their versions of Country/pop/& blues standards were a delightful melange rh... MORE
