Here the legendary Jamaican tenor sax man returns to his jazz roots (he was as a teenager a member of the Sonny Bradshaw Seven, before forming the Rass Brass reggae horn section in 1977). On this tune, recorded in late 1996, piano is by John Williams, and there are two drummers - Idris Muhammad in the right hand speaker and Sly Dunbar in the left. The tune itself was recorded by the Mighty Diamonds in 1976 - this cut opens with a brief quote from Joe Zawinul's "Mercy Merc... MORE
45 (as in RPM) collectors, bloggers, and Northern Soul crate diggers have been raving about these Georgia-based Labels, both run by a cat named Jesse Jones. Just recently the Numero Group dropped a 50 song,2 disc comp. on the labels, that falls heavily on the good music side of rarity crate digging. In some cases these compilations of incredibly rare singles thrive on the back story, but these cuts, especially those of Eula Cooper, leave you wondering why these recor... MORE

Heroin has claimed the life of the original Manson bassist, Brad Stewart/Gidget Gein. As part of Manson’s original Spooky Kids, Stewart helped set the style that the band became known for. After being kicked out of Manson for the drugs that would eventually kill him (and when you are kicked out of [...]

We have a new tradition here at our house on Sunday night, Michelle invites her friend Wendy over, we cook dinner and watch True Blood. It's kind of funny when True Blood first started I was the only one who was into the show. After I kept on raving about it, one day while I was at work, Michelle and Wendy got hooked watching True Blood ondemand. So now we watch it, kind of like a viewing party, make it an event, with dinner, treats and all. It's one helluva show. It'... MORE
hey folks,
i know there's been disappointment with some of you that mog has lost some of its home-town community feel over time as we've grown. i'll be the first to admit that it doesn't feel the same to me either.
for me, it's not just the MMN posts. in my opinion, the number of uninteresting mog posts outweigh the number of uninteresting MMN posts. one thing i know doesn't work for me, is that with the overall frequency of posts, scouring through them all to find the ... MORE

This song was playing in the background while I was slaving away slingin' java for the working class way too early in the morning today. It suddenly caught my ear and though I've heard it a thousand times I realized that it may just be the perfect theme song for the present moment. It's gritty, rockin', somewhat angry sounding, I'm not really sure what most of the lyrics are, but I think we can get by with just learning the main refrain. Sing it with me now... "Where did... So here’s the drill. Gang Gang Dance’s Saint Dymphna is out on October 21st on Social Registry. I have an advance copy and am going to sit down, listen, and blog my review/experience live, and hopefully, won’t have the egregious grammatical errors that plagued the Deerhunter real time review. As far as the music that [...]

I cannot apologise enough for my error in reporting Alton Ellis' death while he still clings to life. Having checked the information from three different sources (one of which quoted an apparently reliable source), I posted in good faith. I have personally apologised to Blakka for my error. Alton remains one of my great musical heroes, and a man whose path did cross with mine briefly thirty years ago. Sorry. Moving swiftly on... here is Eumir Deodato, live in concert in... MORE

I'm in the middle of watching the first episode of the Americanized version of BBC series Life on Mars. So far so good. It got me thinking of a question I want to share with all my fellow moggers, what if you woke up in New York City circa 1973? What's the first thing you would do in NYC 1973? I would want to find one of my heroes John Lennon. Just to meet Lennon would make this mind trip complete. Then go to Max's Kansas City and the original CBGB's. I'm sure I'd run... MORE
