WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

(53)

"What could it be Paul? Something in the way she moves..." with that one question begins my favorite outtake from the tumultuously infamous Get Back/Let it Be sessions.

I've always said that I would have loved to have been in the room or a fly in the wall while The Beatles were in the recording studio. With this rehearsal outtake of "Something" we get the opportunity to eavesdrop on an early session in the recording of one of the most popularly successful songs in the whole Beatles canon.

It has been largely documented that these sessions were fraught with tension and animosity among the Fab Four. But in this outtake you hear George asking John and Paul for advice on how to finish writing the song. You can hear both encouragement shared by both Lennon and McCartney throughout this rehearsal version.

"Just say whatever comes into yr head each time attracts me like a cauliflower, til you get the word." John suggests.

"But I've been through this one for like six months...just that line I couldn't think of anything...like a..." George retorts.

You can hear Harrison trying to come up with concrete lyrics by make up phrases like "...attracts me like a pomegranate" and "Well did you know who missed show...I don't know..."

My favorite part is hearing all three singing harmony on "Something on the way she moves..." which is the only few parts of the song he had finished. To hear the seeds and origins of "Something" in an outtake like this one makes you appreciate the magic and artistry of The Beatles.
