So, tonight, I get the chance to tackle two musical firsts: Seeing Elvis Costello for the first time, and seeing The Police for the first time. The band will play its final concert ever, a fundraiser benefiting arts programming on public tv stations WNET and WLIW in NY. In addition to the concert proceeds going to a good cause, Sting and The Police will contribute $1 million to the MillionTreesNYC project, which the city will match! If you see Andy Summers, Sting or Stewart Copeland - the three members of the Police - at a bar, don't hesitate to ask them to buy you a glass of the 100 year-aged Rémy Martin Louis XIII Cognac. The trio have the dough for it. Their reunion tour was the highest grossing tour of 2007, beating out Genesis and pop-star Justin Timberlake. I don't know how much I believe in the whole "last show ever" concept. Anyone who is anyone seems to reunite, even the Police. But alas ... the Police will play their last concert EVER (again) at Madison Square Garden on August 7th, with openers the B-52s. The trio will go out with a charitable bang, with tickets for their final bow only available thru donations to New York public television stations Thirteen/WNET and WLIW21. So there was a bomb threat near my office today.  Kept us cooped up inside when we should have been out eating lunch.  And no delivery, either.  The cops were keeping everyone out of the area.  Isn't delivery an inalienable right?  Anyway, snapped the photo above just before the police shooed me back inside for my own safety. In 1982 Sting played the Devil in a movie called Brimstone and Treacle, and The Police wrote a devastating song called I Burn For You. Sting later covered it on his first solo album along with a few other Police covers, which at the time seemed to be a statement - I wrote these, or something similar. The Police were forced to cancel two more European concert dates due to frontman Sting's ongoing throat infection. With only four more shows left on the band's run through Europe, both October 15th (Monday) and October 16th (Tuesday) shows in Manchester, UK were postponed. Could hear "Get Up Stand Up" by the Master Marley as we walked up to the stadium gates and were greeted with one of the greatest bands in the world. Can't even remember the opening tune cause I was in another world - couldn't believe I was there. Filth concert, sucking beer, watching the full moon, and one of the best gigs of my life! I will never forget it...ever!
