It doesn't take a crystal ball to tell you that music is a visual medium and that punk rock is one of the more interesting visuals you can get.
Back in the mid-to-late 90s, when I worked at VH1, we were not allowed to play videos by punk rock bands; we were not allowed to reference punk rock bands either. That was the domain of our sister channel, MTV. MTV also got to play heavy metal and hard rock. VH1 got as hard as Bon Jovi, and as punk rock as The Pretenders.

By Grabthar’s hammer! I just realized that the Cramps are not playing their usual Halloween show in San Francisco this year. I don’t know exactly how many times the cadaverous Lux Interior, the dead-sexy Poison Ivy and cohorts have rattled the Warfield or Fillmore on October 31st with their patented brand of shockabilly, but it won’t feel as much like All Hallows’ Eve without them in town. So, it is definitely arguable who and what band was the first to practice the fine art of psychobilly. Regardless of the answer, from my perspective The Cramps "popularized" (if you can ever associate that word with the Cramps) the genre. There is just so much to say about The Cramps and I’m not sure to start… there is their; embrace of the trash/low culture image and media, from forgotten primitive rock and roll to the illusion to 50’s films and Hollywood, to their howling mad antics, The Cramps have been one of the corner stones of what horror punk has become. Sometimes the inserts have not even been stolen yet! I like listening to a whole album by someone new to me, rather than just downloading a few tracks. I really can't deal with morose music. I don't mind a little moody music, but now and then I hear something that's just too gloomy. I'm listening to the "new additions" to my music library on shuffle today, and hearing all sorts of great things. Everything from Molly Hatchet to Tool to Wylie the Yodeling Cowboy to PJ Harvey. Then along comes a Leonard Cohen song. Now, I know lots of people really like him, and I won't argue that he's a great songwriter, but it pushed ... MORE
