Post my declaration to explore my MOG I would like to say that this thing is getting better. I made my first purchase the other day at JB based on my MOG exploring. I had never heard of STARS and most likely would never have come across them if it was not for the click here, read there exploring this thing has on offer. My 8 year old daughter, Bella had career day at school today. When I was a kid, career day meant parents came in and talked at the kids about what they did for a living...boring. It's different for her 2nd grade class. Career day is where the kids dress up like what they want to be when they are grown. Bella doesn't want to be an astronaut or a doctor...oh, no. Stars' third album, Set Yourself on Fire is the kind where you listen 2 or 3 times and let it slowly evaporate to the back of your head. Fast forward 3 years later when a set of covers and remixes is born- Do You Trust Your Friends? This was going to be my first time seeing Stars and the anticipation was wearing me out. Seriously, all day at work all I could think about were all the Amy Millan and Torquil Campbell duets I was going to hear that night. It's pretty safe to say that I wasn't going to be disappointed. Truer words were never spoken. I can't tell you all how liberated I feel. Knowing that in like 2 months I am taking the first real risk of my life. It took me so long to get over the fear of other people's perceptions. I spent far too many years trying to fit into some sort of model that wasn't me. A business casual job, relationshiops that I knew wouldn't make me happy, but I stayed in regardless. Man, it took so long...but once you let go of the fear, and just embrace w... MORE

Perhaps it's because I'm so indecisive that my musical tastes are all over the map... I thought I'd write this post because the songs might have been missed by people who weren't Stars fans. The album, 'Do You Trust Your Friends' was a compilation of remixes and covers of Stars songs by (I think) all-Canadian acts. I've been enjoying this terrific album by Stars. The music is at once uplifting and melancholy, my personal favorite of dichotomies. Perhaps it is the refreshing notion of moving positively through whatever crap life hands you. I absolutely love this video as well. And, yes, it is snowing in Chicago.

I was talking with a friend of mine at a record label today, and asked him to turn me on to a few bands that were new and exciting. He named 5 acts of various genres, and I spent all day listening to them on Rhapsody. They've all got full length albums out. I heard a lot of style, atmosphere, dynamics, color in the music of all the bands. None of them "sucked". But honestly, what I didn't hear, from any of these bands, was a great SONG. I am getting pretty excited to see Stars with Lloyd Cole supporting. I have mixed feelings about the new record however. I've only been able to listen to it a couple of times, but I seem to like "Set Yourself on Fire" and "Heart" a bit better. I have 2 days to get the new record in my system, but there is so much music I am listening to right now that I can't neglect...and on that list: 1.
