Every line of influence passes straight through Sam Phillips. In her own music there’s shades of Patti Smith and Cyndi Lauper and Billie Holliday, Bobbie Gentry and Emmylou Harris and Martha Reeves. Nonesuch Records has relaunched its site with an interesting twist- when you buy a physical CD, they'll ship it to you, and provide you with immediate access to DRM-free 320k downloads. kind of cool, but also betwixt and between. one wonders why they didn't just go whole hog and offer a lossless option, saving the cost of shipping the physical product.
stiill, unlike rhapsody the site appears to be available worldwide, and the do have an extremely eclectic catalog.
So I wore this album out one winter in Chicago, while building a guitar in my friend's cabinet shop. Talk about freezing. Wet-sanding a finish when you can't feel your fingers. Not so fun. But I got it done, and still play it once in a while. The point is: she's good. She doesn't have a huge vocal range, and her whole thing is sort of obscure.
