The release of Metallica's so called "Black Album" saw them projected in popularity from that of fellow Thrash bands, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth and into the area of multi-platinum record sales. In listening to this album over the course of a week I came to realise just how much it reminds me of late 70's and early 80's British Metal. I feel that the overall reduction in speed that this album took, seems to cause the band's early influences to come forward through the m... MORE

The inevitable happened on Tuesday night, when Death Magnetic hit the leak wire. The very next day, Lars responded on a radio show in California, claiming, "Listen, we’re ten days from release. I mean, from here, we’re golden. If this thing leaks all over the world today or tomorrow, happy days. Happy days. Trust me. [...]

While Metallica's Death Magnetic, the band's ninth studio album, idles quietly in oblivion until its unknown September release date, the metal band have gone on to tease us with its tracklist. The Rick Rubin-produced 10-track record is the first time the band have worked on an entire studio album with current bassist Robert Trujillo. Among Death Magnetic's cryptic titles is the third version of "The Unforgiven." The original (and best) of course appeared on 1991's Bl... MORE

I'm guessing there's a good two hours until this thing gets taken down from YouTube... so enjoy it while it lasts. For those latecomers, Metallica playing and kicking up dust in the desert intertwines with politically-charged storyline. Soldiers are fighting in the Middle East, getting shot, then a car pulls up. The soldiers don't know whether to shoot the people in it, possible suicide bombers, or not. To see what the US trooper does you got to watch. At minute 4:40 this ... MORE
The internet seemed like a quiet place yesterday (not too many people commenting), which made me think that music lovers were still re-cooperating from a long weekend of festival-ing. In the UK crowds were getting their faces rocked at the Reading & Leeds festival, where Metallica's set included "The Day That Never Comes," a newbie from their forthcoming "Death Magnetic." In US many flocked to San Francisco’s inaugural and chilly Outside Lands festival, where even Beck was... MORE
The amazing M.I.A. in action. Photos by Charley Rogulewski Every Bonnaroo becomes its own epic story, outrageous accounts into the weird, unpredictable that couldn’t be made up, even if you tried…hard. This year mine started off checking into the Park Motel, a small mom and pop operation on main street Manchester, TN (same zip as Bonnaroo) followed by two DEA agents. As the DEA agents busted up an illegal drug trafficking operation, a meth lab perhaps, I got into my... MORE
While new details the Metallica's Death Magnetic begin to surface, frontman James Hetfield is giving fans a little more insight on the album title. "It started out as kind of a tribute to people that have fallen in our business, like Layne Stanley and a lot of the people that have died, basically — rock and roll martyrs of sorts. And then it kind of grew from there," Hetfield explained of the term Death Magnetic. In 2002 Stanley, the frontman of Alice in Chains, was ... MORE

Metallica's Lars Ulrich loves Black Sabbath and Deep Purple -- and so does his 10-year-old son.
Ulrich may have played songs from those old rock bands around the house on his stereo, but he gives credit for his son's excitement to another source: video games.
Myles Ulrich is a fan of games such as "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band," which have spawned a comeback for rock music.
"It's a cool generational thing to share that with your kids," said Ulrich, the drummer for the multi-p... MORE

Source: Billboard Music News Like its predecessor "St. Anger," the new Metallica album, "Death Magnetic," will be released worldwide off-cycle on Friday Sept. 12 via Warner Bros. No reason was given for the switch from a traditional Monday/Tuesday release; in 2003, the group's label claimed Friday was chosen to prevent pirated copies of "St. Anger" from entering the marketplace.

This isn’t any new news but I saw that it was missing from the mog-o-shpere and I wanted some input.
Since May Metallica have been airing Death Magnetic studio footage via their subscriber site MissionMetallica.com. Still no specific September release date has been given for the Rick Rubin-produced album, but Metallica has revealed (and this is what was missing from the mog-o-sphere) that it will be coughing up the first in five years in three different versions.
