Manu Chao's music vids consistently capture a beautiful spirit on film. His brand new video for "Politik Kills" off La Radiolina is a prime example. Self-directed with JS Sauvaire co-directing, it's shot from Chao's perspective as he follows a young fella around Monrovia, Liberia. FADER Mag reports that the kid was a soldier during the civil war that ended only a year ago. As I watched this, I realized he's probably walked that same route a hundred times, touting a rif... MORE
damn had to unshuffle to listen to some more manu chao...here's one of my faves from 07's la radiolina
too lazy to go into how fucing awesome mano negra was but the last album from the lead singer of that now defunct band is pretty tight
On my way to post something brief about Manu Chao's La Radiolina, I ran across a post of the new Magnetic Fields album, by one Spencer Owen, that totally nails what's wrong with the album. Check it out over here. I'd really like to see Stephen Merritt pull off an homage to the Jesus and Mary Chain, but if he's going to do it he'll need to dig a bit farther into that imagination of his. Basically what we get are some typically cute and pretty Magnetic Fields songs pasted... MORE
MUSIC: TOP 15 01 Goodbye the Band - Sky Tiger LP [download it here, free] Goodbye the Band (download many more of his other albums here, free, as well) is my longtime friend and couple-of-times roommate, the New Jersey-born John Acquadro. He and I have bonded (and occasionally tussled) over the last near-decade about the music we make (among other things), and it is safe to say I've rarely (if ever) been more consistently astonished with a single person's musical output... it's been a few years now since i first heard this, again, i was introduced by a "friend" on MySpace. this is a great song; i listened to it like non-stop the 1st summer i heard it...it goes great with a Red Stripe. haha!
I know it is likely that you’ve heard Manu Chao but have you ever gone past the entertaining track Bongo Bongo? Manu Chao has the talent for accelerating sounds into a realm of pure exuberance even when the songs have something of melancholy content. It is extraordinary to know that many individuals out there can turn what seams to be a moment of despondency into something truly beautiful and if you don’t understand this track but like the sound check out LA CHANGO FAMILIA... wanted to take the kiddies over to prospect park to see manu chao, but the celebrate brooklyn web site said it was sold out. sold out? a concert in the middle of a giant urban park sold out? i thought we'd be able to show up, roll out a blanket, get comfy and see the concert. now, instead of good music, cold beer and a picnic, we are gonna stay in and eat fried egg sandwiches and let the boys watch bad movies. bummer. i really wanted to see manu chao live. did anyone go? d... Went and saw Manu Chao the other night, and it was a great show. He's a great artist, and although I couldn't understand lots of the words because I'm a stupid gringo, it was real high energy and tons of fun. I'd recommend it if he ever comes anywhere close to you.
Arrgh....I was preparing my magnus opus MOG post...but then a barrage of concerts happened...I finally recovered from the physical exertion of four concerts in eight days (and financial exertion -- i was considering a MOG post on the inanities of the myriad convenience charges by online ticket sites but opted out to keep my MOG on a positive note) and thought I'd find some time to finish and publish the post...but then today (my birthday) my friend Donald showed up with th... Fascinating new widget, this one, "Top Songs of MOGs Like Me." - I hate Interpol!- "13 Angels" by A Silver Mt. Zion was one of my favorite pieces of music when I was a teenager!- I love the Magnetic Fields!- I dig that Thom Yorke character!- I love Steely Dan... but not Can't Buy a Thrill!- I have a (very brief) history with Francisco Lopez ... that I'd rather not divulge here. Also has to do with my teenage years. Provocative stuff. Hopefully it will keep dredging up ... MORE
