New! Stream Jolie Holland's "Mexico City" off "The Living & The Dead

(160)
Blog post image preview

Jolie Holland is a dark angel of song and this is a track from her upcoming album, The Living & The Dead. While the arrangement here is more rock than her previous recordings in the way that Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited was more rock than Another Side of Bob Dylan, her lovely voice is as unique as ever, flirting with jazz, folk and rock a way that only Jolie Holland can pull off. I love this song and can't wait for the album.

Album: The Living and the Dead

Recently, Anti released the album cover for Jolie Holland's upcoming "The Living and the Dead", and it looks excellent as always. She has always put herself on her album covers, mostly in photographs but once in a drawing. The point is I can't imagine seeing some other design without her in it because she has established this trend so well, it's pretty much set in stone.

Most solo artists do put themselves on the cover, and bands get in on the fun too. I'm not sure which I ... MORE

Blog post image preview I don't want to cloud this post up with to many words but I was listening to Minneapolis' listener supported radio station 89.3 the Current this last weekend. (which I rarely do) This tingles my spine for some reason. This train done rolled over me. Enjoy!

Blog post image preview I want to invite all Moggers who will be in San Francisco in July to an exhibit of photographs, "Haight Street People: 40 Years After The Summer Of Love," at the People's Cafe on Haight Street. Photograph from "Haight Street People" by Michael Goldberg. Using old Twin Reflex cameras I visited Haight Street once a week during much of 2005 and early 2006, photographing people who live, work or hang out on Haight Street. Among the people photographed are singer/songwrite... MORE

Blog post image preview Jolie Holland is one of my favorite artists. She has the most beautiful voice -- she's been compared to Billie Holiday and kiaren Dalton, but it's a unique voice, truly like no other. She writes moving songs about love and life. I love her three albums, and you see an artist contuing to grow and evolve if you listen to them in order. First Catalpa, then Escondida, and finally Springtime Can Kill You. Jolie was the first musician to have a MOG page. When I met with her ... MORE

Thanks to Mog, Jim and I had a killer time last night seeing Jolie Holland at the very-crowded-but-sweet-crowd at the legendary Fillmore, my most favorite venue in town. We were close up, about 8 layers back. Only good things happen here. Jolie's sound was full, her voice luscious and strong, her musical talents oozing from the piano, the violin, the guitar. Her backing band of horns, strings, bass, drum were all fantastic and comforting. Wow. We were really, really blow... MORE

The Birthday Saw

My husband and I often host a get to-gathering of musicians that begins to assemble around 8 in the evening. Our friends wind their way up our road to our little house in the trees to bring their instruments or just borrow one of ours, to share, to change the scenery, to press record and go home in the morning with a silver disk full of the night's musical contents. Lukebible brought a saw one night and I've been forever changed since. Though I've never had the urge to ... MORE

A little bluesy, a little twangy

Artist:
Album:
Track:
So I keep seeing the Jolie Holland contest advertised on here and I keep saying that I'm going to give some of her songs a listen. I finally did today and, I must admit, I'm quite impressed. Her voice is really unique sounding... smooth and twangy at the same time... (You should know that I'm going through a twangy phase right now. I hope that doesn't detract from my credibility.) I decided to start with her first album, Escondida, which I like a lot so far. At first liste... MORE

Blog post image preview I made a post earlier today about Jane as Police Woman and mentioned Jolie Holland at the end...I realized that Jolie's stuff is compelling enough to warrant her own post. "Jolie with her twin great uncles, Bud & Bud--the Hooper Twins. Sitting in on drums is the excellent Bobbie Wayne Mains, Great Aunt to a Dixie Chick." picture and caption from jolieholland.com Inspired by extraordinarypoems posting lyrics in the comments of the JoanPolice entry, here are some wicked...
