I first heard this song on a Mahalia Jackson Christmas CD. A Google! search revealed that this is a perennial from 1542, as a children's song as well as a Christmas carol. This version by Joan Osborne has all the soul of this 16th century carol, and captures all drama and joy of this season.

Joan Osborne's 2005 music CD release of Christmas songs has been given an angelic cover for 2007. However, she did ask a question of Santa Claus that hasn't been answered...yet. So, what's the answer, St. Nick?

This is totally out of character for me but I'm actually listening to Christmas music before Thanksgiving! Heading down to Georgia in a couple of weeks for an extended working vacation, and stocking up on the tunage for the trip.Been on a Joan Osborne kick lately and a bit disappointed by Pretty Little Stranger, not so much for the sound, it's great and I dig anything she sings, but just about all of the songs on this album are about lost love and just so damn depressing. ...
