Strand 1: Toward the end of a post a week or so ago Madeline Burke added a nice anecdotal tidbit about Elvis and Jerry Lee and a gate and a gun, which prompted me to ask a random question about Carl Perkins who had been alluded to in a Drive-By Truckers song I had been listening to. Later I had the pleasure of reading this sweet post on Carl Perkins by Madeline Burke. Listening again today I also catch the "take that night train to Memphis" invitation. Strand 2: As Memphi... I've never been bowled over by this song, neither by the original nor by the various covers I've heard in my short time on MOG, but hearing this version Friday night in the context of the others, this one won me over.

Listening to the original in the wee hours last night I thought, damn these mothers are laying down some bad-A$$ed funk on the instrumental breaks. The Indigo Girls don't exactly break the bank on this one, but it's a pretty nice cover in any case. And I do really like those scraping violins.

Blog post image preview Today's Blue America candidate is Darcy Burner from the suburban district just east of Seattle (WA-08). She's joining us for a live blog session at 11am PT over at Firedoglake. Darcy, who's 36 years old, was the lead product manager for Microsoft.net and both technology and music are integral parts of her life. If Alaska Senator Ted Stevens represents clueless old politics, Darcy Burner is the antidote. I asked her if there were any songs that really inspire her that she w... MORE

You know what I love about this place? Every day I connect just a little bit more with people through the thing that moves me the most: music. This morning I discovered my twin from another mother all the way across the country loves this group as much as I do. I don't have any of their stuff on my work computer, and I couldn't find any vids of my favorite song of theirs, "Watershed," but I did find this one, which is up there among my favorites. Some of the things I lov... MORE

Symptom: MOG-Paralysis Solution: Chick Sing-along

Blog post image preview Being the partner and home office-sharer with a MOG-postin' maniac, often leaves me feeling, dare I say, inadequate in the mogging realm. Not that I don't have things to say or that I haven't been enjoying music, but I just become paralyzed when it comes to posting. So, the other day when I dug out my old case logic I found a bunch of stuff I haven't listened to in a long time. Items included: Best of Brady Bunch, Lemonheads, Mazzy Star, Ugly Kid Joe (I shamedly admit)... MORE

Reflecting on What You Expect from Your Bands

Blog post image preview In response to comments from an Indigo Girls uber-fan who was a bit weirded out that they didn't completely embrace the new album, but instead really only dug one song at the moment: I'm eager to hear their new one. I'm picking it up in old-fashioned CeeDee form today when I jet from work early to grab Addy and have fun in Roanoke; I worked too much last weekend to not play hooky a bit. I need to grab the ZooTV DVDs too. Anyway, back to the Girls. Their a strange ani... MORE

Boys to Men to Ladies to Girls

Artist:
Album: Despite Our Differences *
My thursday morning sound tracks: New tunes by both the Indigo Girls and Barenaked Ladies. What is this, high school? Can I get some Ben Harper? Barenaked Ladies.. hmmm.. I was hesitant, so I only grabbed a few tracks off of eMusic. Do I dare call it... easy listening? One review called BNL the Charlie Brown of Canada. I can't speak for Canada, but the color of this album is definitely brown. While I do think you're musically talented, maybe i'm just not all that into yo... MORE
