Vacation here I come -> and to kick off a beautiful, mid 70'2 weekend hiking and spending time with the wife that is so cherished, since we hardly have time with us working alternating schedules and having a 4 year old who seems to have smoked crack and cannot sit still or relax! So hiking, hot tub, swimming, movies, dinner's, and local sight-seeing -> stuff we don't get to do during the year much. And after the best bon-fire of the year last night, my send off feels com... The year was 1978, I was on a merchant ship anchored off of Ascension Island feeding the piranha anything we could find just to see them frenzy in the daytime and watching the porpoises chase the flying fish into the sides of the ship to knock them senseless for an easy feed at night. I was reading a lot and listening to my stash of tapes, standing watch and performing the day to day chores aboard ship. Life was simple, times were good, but there was someplace jus... MORE

Back in 2007, auctioneers Bonhams and Butterfields sold more than $1.1 million worth of former Grateful Dead manager Rock Scully's memorabilia from his days with the band. On Sunday, Bonhams will auction off More Skeletons From The Closet from not only Scully, but also from the collections of Dead keyboardists Vince Welnick and Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan. There are some incredible gems among the 174 lots that B&B plans to auction, and if we had won the lottery we'd have a ... MORE

Jambase put up a really nice tribute post to Brent Mydland today, he passed away 18 years ago. Seems like just yesterday we were checking out "the new guy" on his first tour with the boys up in Maine. The waiters at the restaurant we went to that night swore my buddy ED D. was Brent and we were all with the band and we didn't do too much to deny it, they served us especially large lobsters with all the fixins' and treated us like royalty. Here's to you Brent, thanks - ... MORE

It is important to remember that the Grateful Dead were a Rhythm & Blues based rock n roll band, with jugband/folk/country sensibilities around the edges.Early Dead shows would find Pigpen gettin' his Mojo workin', riffing on classic blues with an authentic vibe all his own.And the Dead had acoustic shows long before "unplugged" made it hip.And they had three great vocalists, dermahrk's assertions notwithstanding. From Bear's Choice then, we have the Dead's transcendent ta...
