Apple came out victorious after a ruling in Washington yesterday (October 2nd) by the US Copyright Royalty Board that froze the royalty rate for songs purchased via iTunes for the next five years. The National Music Publishers Association wanted to increase the royalty fee from 9 cents to 15 cents per track. Yesterday news hit that Coldplay were giving out a free MP3 of their first Viva La Vida single, "Violet Hill." So today I ventured into the inter-space to download the track via the Band's Web site. After being asked for my email, zip code and country of origin I was told to check my inbox for a link to the download. I ran into minor technical difficulties. If there was one song from Coldplay’s latest album Viva La Vida I’d try to win anyone over with it’d be "Lost!," which sounds like it was recorded inside a cathedral. The biggest problem with Coldplay is that nobody seems able to accurately judge how good or bad they are. Put ‘Coldplay+boring’ or ‘Coldplay+brilliant’ into Google and you get almost the same (at least on the scale of the internet) number of results. For every review proclaiming them as ‘the next U2’ (and there are many- do a Google search for this, too - I’m trying to convince myself Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t write any of them), there’s a Chuck Klosterman piece calling them ... From new album, Coldplay is still brilliant. Lost! is reminiscent of their older work - The Scientist, piano-driven vocal. After listening, I was not so sure, Am i lost?

Do Coldplay have the balls to release their new album Viva La Vida pro bono, like their fellow Brits Radiohead? No. But Chris Martin and Co. are doing their best to keep fans happy while bringing the bread home by treating the world's internet users with a free MP3 of the album's first single "Violet Hill." Giving away free music is addicting for Coldplay.
