This is a band I can't believe I wasn't listening to earlier. I've slapped myself twice today for not giving them a listen when my flatmate recommended them a while back. I'm absolutely hooked on "You Forgot It In People". Amazing stuff. I picked up this acoustic track of "Almost Crimes", check it out if you've never heard of BSS or if you already love them and just want to admire their greatness

i was browsing through some old cds the other day when i came across "you forgot it in people" by broken social scene: one of my favorite cds ever. the tracks are so fun and fluid that you just cant resist. "pacific theme" is the perfect music to listen to while doing anything. so very relaxing, along with "looks just like the sun". "capture the flag" is such a beautiful opening of shimmering noise. while "almost crimes" and "stars and sons" supply the meat for this awesome i... MORE

I hate New Year's eve. It's one of those holidays that makes you feel like a jerk if you're doing what you always happen to do on a Sunday, Tuesday, or whatever night. I found myself in my studio around 9:30pm on Sunday playing around with some loop ideas and what not. I have a feeling that the collective will be the dominant way of making music in the next set of years. Not that this will be overly popular or sell a lot of records, but I think the best music will come out of larger groups of people writing and creating music rather than traditional solo artist. The singer/songwriter genre is comletely exhausted. This isn't to say singer/songwriters aren't making decent music, but it's nearly impossible to not tread forever on already co... MORE

So I'm here set to try on Broken Social Scene for the first time. I bring up their 2002 album "You Forgot It In People" on my music purchasing thing I use and start previewing songs. The first thin I here is something that sounds like the main riff from Pink Floyd's "Breathe". Needless to say I am NOT impressed. Recently I was reading an old review of Broken Social Scene's fantastic You Forgot It In People on Pitchfork's site. Aside from deservedly fawning all over this album, reviewer Ryan Schreiber also gives one of the best explanations I've ever read on the true appeal on indie music. The italics are mine. So I've been seeing these guys everywhere on MOG. Apparently EVERYONE likes them, so I downloaded an album.
So far so good. If this keeps up (I'm not even through the first song, but I like what I hear) I shall be pleased as... well as pleased as I can be about finding a new good band. ;)
... The second song (which has just started) is interesting in the ways I like it. This might very well make my autumn playlist. It's nice and low-key.
