Ben Folds is feeling a bit ambitious it seems. Inspired by the many university a cappella videos he found on YouTube of his music, Folds' new album, scheduled for spring '09 release, will be "a cappella versions of his music performed by the best university groups." Here's a couple I found just by typing "ben folds a cappella" in the You Tube Search box (University of Chicago's is off the hizoook!):

"I was writing a much slower song, and it was the chorus. The instrumental part with the fluegelhorn was probably the only thing that we were really excited about when we left North Carolina. We'd been playing that together and it sounded finished and tight. There was a lot of editing going on in that song. It took a lot of turns and was a real evolution. There's a total Burt Bacharach rip-off section in it, fluegelhorn... MORE

On his latest "solo" effort, Ben Folds offers less of an album than a study in quirky, quirky songs. In the lead up to the completion of Way to Normal fans are told/reminded about his latest divorce, but then it is suggested we shouldn't actually think about it when picking apart each song bit-by-hidden-message-bit. Apparently, the song included in this post, "Kate," reminds R of me. He says it has reminded him of me since college. (Of course, after we had met.) I suppose I should say I'm flattered... Hahahaha! But, for the record, I don't smoke pot. I just enjoy getting plastered, is all. And, really, who doesn't? Right, right, right?

But the real highlight of my Friday was wandering by MySpace and finding high-def video of the entire Ben Folds Five reunion show -- orchestrated to kick off MySpace's new Front To Back series -- waiting for me there. A completely brilliant show done up just right by the producers with interview clips and excellent videography of the show. Bliss, I tell you, bliss .

Having spent several hours last night witnessing the slice of humanity that is an urban emergency room...got me trying to think of hospital-themed songs. I could only readily come up with two... I've never been a fan. I enjoyed 'Catch My Disease', when I was in a chirpy over-happy mood, 'Cigarettes Will Kill You' was also listenable, but now? Ben Lee is not an option.
I was wandering around JB HiFi today on my fortnightly scan-for-new-exciting-cheap-music, and they were playing Ben Lee's new album. Hmm. It sounds a lot like the old albums...but with more country...Anywho, it got me thinking back to a magazine... MORE

I made a myspace bulletin today, all about music. Yes stab me, please. I think it was half decent, questions included sad songs nostalgic songs fave albums etc. But anyway.Not the greatest day today. Only in history do I avoid the daily music debate; with the hard rock/jazz man Chris, rap man Morgan and avid anti-emo boagn Dion.
