The Cool Kids

One thing Outside Lands seemed short of was some of the more rap and hip hop artists and electronic DJs selections. Unlike Coachella with its expansive electronic dance tent and Lollapalooza with an assortment of hip hop artists and dance stages, this festival was for the most part a lot of white folk and rock artists (even some forgotten ones- like Cake anyone?)- save a token rapper or two (Lupe Fiasco) and a splattering of world music (thank you Manu Chao) and reggae (thank you Toots above).

So it was delightfully refreshing when The Cool Kids bounded onstage- feisty, joking, and rapping silly about girls, cars, and how whack it was that there were windmills nearby. With them came the small consortium of day-glo hipsters with neon shades and plenty of dance attitude. It was a little fiery kick to the hippie cool-aid.

Evidently not everyone likes hippies....

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE
Speaking of hip and indie.....Next up, on the Twin Lands stage, on came Broken Social Scene with a whole new social scene. There was the chick from The Stars, as well as the guy from the Apostle of Hustle, who spent the first three songs cloaked n a scarf to disguise his identity. But fans they had- packed deep- and it’s through the consortium of sound, the collaboration of instruments- and those heart-felt climaxes - that Broken Social Scene managed to cause mid-day goose-bumps.

BON IVER
Midday, songster Bon Iver, i.e. Justin Veron, caused an ethereal acoustic shivers through the crowd. The good kind. Gifted with a husky, emotive falsetto, Bon Iver is a pleasure to watch perform- no strings attached, no masks or glittering costumes necessary. His music? Hints of chamber music harmonies that melds with deep, pensive acoustic strumming. The result? The simple guitar-and-me set felt of a tiny little acoustic session by the sea. Mid-set, Bon Iver even managed to start a full-crowd harmonious sing along with the song "The Wolves (Part I and II). Which thus caused a sea of smiles, as the sun shone down golden. Priceless really.

International Fans?
This guy below came all the way from Zimbabwe to see Outside Lands. Well to see America at least (he was on a massive roadtrip). Evidently, Bon Iver is pretty big in Zimbabwe.

DRIVE BY TRUCKERS
Drive By Truckers' Patterson Hood

Next up came an instant injection of southern comfort with Drive By Truckers. Indeed there was Jack Daniels and sweat. While Mike Cooley kicked off the set, Patterson Hood lead the crowd with charisma, Southern drawl, and heavy riffing. He was also a genial gentleman, thanking the crowd for being there and thanking San Franciscio for being such a cool place….

I appreciate your great photos. I love the Drive By Tuckers. Glad you got to see them and take the pix.
Indie, Great pix -- I too love the Truckers -- a great live act. I've got Bon Iver downloaded -- just need to listen to it. Makes me feel groovy just looking at them. Also the AB/CD shirt on the kid from a previous post was great. I've got to get that shirt for my little dude -- who like to ROCK!
Sunday was a sun-blessed day in Golden Gate Park as Outside Lands kicked off with Nicole Atkins and Toots and the Maytals. In fact, evidently two guys were so psyched about the weather that they decided to drop trou in public- which didn't make the cops too happy.
DROPPING TROU?

Regardless, Nicole Atkins & The Sea soothed all woes with dark, psychedelic Jersey-shore romantic strumming and warpling voice.

Next up, Toots reigned reggae king again on the main stage. Despite his age and invariably decades of pot smoking, Toots has indefatigable energy that charged over the hippie-yippie crowd. Though his voice is a bit worn and he more sways than grinds, like any grandfather, this grandfather of Reggae will be well loved for years to come.

I find it amazing that you cover all of the bands I like with great pix and commentary. You should be working for Rolling Stone.
I find it amazing that you cover so many bands I've never heard of and make me wish I had. Oh well, I have now.
