Here is Phil Solem’s side-project band, Thrush, doing a cover of John Lennon’s Goodnight. The original featured lush strings and a Ringo vocal on the White Album. This has lots of punk energy, but the vocals remain pretty true to the original. Perhaps a little too much so.
Still very enjoyable.

The other half of the Rembrandts, Phil Solem, came from and is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Maybe that explains why Phil had never been involved in a band without Danny Wilde (at least, one that released records). So, while it wasn’t hard to distinguish what Danny Wilde brought into the Rembrandts, due to all of his solo CDs, trying to get a handle on Phil proved a bit more difficult. This changed when he formed a group called Thrush, a three-piece, and they self-released (no record deal) their solo extant CD, in 2000 through their website . (Title: Thrush.

All three members are Minneapolis-based. They first got together in 1994, and recorded that CD in one day at the studio. The group has been a side project for all involved, so public performances have been rare. Phil handles lead guitar (of course!) and vocals. The bass player is John Fields (in the middle in above pic), who spends most of his time as a producer for acts like Mandy Moore, Switchfoot and Andrew W.K., and the drummer is the inappropriately-named Michael Bland (at right, above), who spends much of his time drumming for people like Prince, Michael Penn and Soul Asylum.
This is a video showing them recording a song not on the CD, called "You Showed Me". The drummer is sequestered in another room for sound separation but you can sure hear him!
So, what does the CD reveal about Phil? That he has a harder-rocking side, more punk-pop than Rembrandts-smooth, and that the slightly off-center humor displayed onstage shows up in his lyrics, e.g. the title to the song "Smile Banana Head" attached to this post. He quotes the 1930s classic movie "Frankenstein" at the end. This song is, again, not on the CD and currently unreleased. To further frustrate potential Thrush fans, the CD is not currently being sold. But the band does have a site on MySpace, and a page on Phil’s website, where tracks can be heard. Try:

and http://www.myspace.com/wearethrush
I will post another track or two in Comments.
Next up: It’s Sunday, so the Thrush unreleased cover of the Beatles’ "Good Night" is coming up.

Ahhh, the wonders of MOG. I finally figured out how to post a song in Comments, and the HTML button disappears from the comment section in my last post.
Before I was rudely interrupted, above is another track from Danny's 1999 EP Bee Sides
And I think I CAN post another track in Comments. Come see, or laugh when I fail!

Hmmm couldnt get either track to play :-(
How's the dogs?
Mojo is in the doggie equivalent of the terrible twos. Huge gobs of energy, a real terrorist. Empties the trash cans, aggressive to the other dogs. Plus, he's either at an awkward stage or is going to have kind of a homely face. Still, I love the little guy to death. Mrs. DM is out of town for a few days, so he will be sleeping with me!
Don't give up. I am now going to keep trying to figure out this posting thing. Hope to figure it out tonight!

Trying to wrap my brain around the extreme oddness of this. I'm glad I know about it now, though I haven't entirely figured out why.....
Phil Solem is a huge Beatles fan, with a love for pop-punk as well. Makes sense to me, and I prefer it to the original.
With all due respect to The Greatest Band In The History Of Rock, it wouldn't take much to top the original of that song....
