I just noticed I have a few tracks in my iTunes which reference heavy metal but aren't metal. In fact, they are kind of ironic, acoustic, alt-country-ish tunes that poke fun at metal, but in an affectionate way. WTF?
I wonder what other songs out there have lyrics that are about a different genre of music than the one being played.
Check out the cute lyrics.
Wilco - Heavy Metal Drummer
I still miss those heavy metal bands
She used to go see on the landing in the summer
She fell in love with a drummer
She fell in love with the drummer
She fell in love
Shiny shiny pants and bleach blonde hair
A double kick drum by the river in the summer
She fell in love with a drummer
Another & another
She fell in love
I miss the innocence I've known
Playing kiss covers
Beautiful & stoned
Unlock my body and move myself to dance
In long liquid flowing blowing glass
Classical music blasting
That's still ringing in my ears
I still miss those heavy metal bands
She used to go see on the landing in the summer
She fell in love with a drummer
She fell in love with the drummer
She fell in love
I miss the innocence I've known
Playing kiss covers
Beautiful & stoned
I miss the innocence I've known
Playing kiss covers
Beautiful & stoned
Playing kiss covers
Beautiful & stoned
Playing kiss covers
Beautiful & stoned
The Mountain Goats - Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton (Texas!)
the best ever death metal band out of denton
were a couple of guys, who'd been friends since grade school.
one was named cyrus, and the other was jeff.
and they practiced twice a week in jeff's bedroom.
the best ever death metal band out of denton
never settled on a name.
but the top three contenders, after weeks of debate,
were satan's fingers, and the killers, and the hospital bombers.
jeff and cyrus believed in their hearts they were headed
for stage lights and leer jets, and fortune and fame.
so in script that made prominent use of a pentagram,
they stenciled their drumheads and guitars with their names.
this was how cyrus got sent to the school
where they told him he'd never be famous.
and this was why jeff,
in the letters he'd write to his friend,
helped develop a plan to get even.
when you punish a person for dreaming his dream,
don't expect him to thank or forgive you.
the best ever death metal band out of denton
will in time both outpace and outlive you.
hail satan!
hail satan tonight!
hail satan!
hail hail!

Dethklok: at least this cartoon metal band plays metal (they actually RAWK, in fact!)

Yeah.

The problem is, I think some metal bands poke fun at themselves without even realising it. Oh, dear. Now I know why I stopped listening to 'the Priest' after Defenders Of The Faith.
This monstrosity is so NOT \m/etal.
However, THIS is the real deal.

When I started reading your post, I immediately thought of that Wilco song! You read my mind. That's the song that got me into them, love it so!
Smashing Pumpkins have a song called "Heavy Metal Machine" off "Machina II" their internet only follow up to "Machina:The Machines Of God" that's a slow rock song but they also do a harder version of it on the cd(I tried to load the song up but it wasn't coming through in the preview. I loaded it on my page here).

I love that wilco song, never seen the clip and it made my night
My Trusted MOGs
Kev, that Wilco clip is from the awesome doc "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" which I highly recommend if you haven't seen it. Love it!

Robin, there are times when I think almost all metal is parody, but then I hear a flash of brilliance and I remember what it's all about. Meanwhile I have come to think of most metal as "performance art" rather than something meant to be taken at face value. Do you think that Priest are long since "over"?
I would like to do an evaluation of metal songs with "metal" in the title and see how they rate!
August, I certainly wasn't familiar with that track, thanks for posting both versions. The loud one is really credible!
Kevin, listen to August and go get "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" from the library! This DVD turned me on to Wilco because I wasn't familiar with their music before I saw it. It also has a strong story line. A must-see!

Yvw Dar, glad you found the 'loud' one credible, haha. Btw, I recall conversing w/you just before you saw that Wilco doc & how you then saw the light afterwards . . . twas an amazing transformation you made @;).
My Trusted MOGs
I'm also a big fan of Heavy Metal Drummer. The lyrics are kind of ironic, I'd agree. I've yet to see their doc, I must check it out.

Colin, you MUST see Wilco's doc, it's quite fascinating. It's probably the most engrossing doc I've seen(& I've seen quite a few). It covers the battle w/their record company not accepting "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot", being dropped by them, being picked up by Nonesuch(who is under the same parent co.) & the internal band problems. The documentarian really got lucky when he decided to do a doc on them during that time period. Can't recommend this higher! Get thee to a video store!(or maybe your local library has it, check their website)

Funny, I never thought of Heavy Metal Drummer as poking fun, more like pure unadulterated nostalgia for a youth spent maybe not watching your favorite bands but the only ones that would come to your town, getting stoned and enjoying them anyway.
My Trusted MOGs
Wade, yeah, I thought about that too, also how so many people go through a punk phase or a metal phase and they look back fondly on it (and then there are those like me who refuse to let it die, LOL!)
My Trusted MOGs
I have to add my love for Wilco in here too, and their great doc. I am with Wade, I think that's a great way to describe the song, it always reminds me of the crazy terrible music I listened to as a kid but can't seem to let go of, no matter how much my husband teases me...
