This is sort of a part 2 to my brief post from yesterday.
Listen to The Brothers Johnson - Strawberry Letter 23 first:
Then go back up top for the original Shuggie Otis version.
Shuggie

and as an added bonus, a scene from "Jackie Brown":

My Trusted MOGs
Again , this is a tune the attraction of which escapes me completely. I have tried manfully for many years to understand its attraction, but neither the original nor the huge hit cover appeals in the slightest. I suspect that I like my singers to be a trifle more passionate

Well... ...I guess you and I can no longer be friends!
Joking. :)
The term "To each their own." seems to fit nicely.
We all have these complete escapes that confound us and in turn confound others. I can't stand the Beach Boys and see no deserved talent there, I also don't understand the Greatful Dead and frankly, I'm a little embarrassed that they exist. But that's just me and I understand that it must be just me because both of these bands have tens of millions of fans. I can deal with that.

I like the Brother's Johnson version better. Maybe because that was the version I grew up listing to.
I too don't get The Greatful Dead and only own Pet Sounds to see how it compares to Sgt. Pepper. No comparison, The Beatles BLOW them away.
My Trusted MOGs
Hmmm....The Beatles?
Mibbes I'm better staying out of this one, then

I've never heard the original and I prefer it but I was never a big fan of the song.

{Hey D, how are things at your end?}
My Trusted MOGs
Shuggie used to play in his dad's band (Johnny Otis) at a very early age. I think he released his first album in his late teens. Then crashed and burned and became a recluse. Moved to Petaluma, CA and came out to play again in 93, but it never took.
Amazing guitar player who peaked or just wanted out way to quickly.

Since I made this post I've read a lot about the guy and it seems like, from what I gathered, at the time he wasn't well respected by the community for some reason. I can't point to anything in particular but that's just something I gleened off of a bunch of things I found about him and his father.
