Even if you aren't from Kentucky or have never visited, odds are you've associated horses and/or horse racing with the Bluegrass State on at least one occasion. Rightfully so, for Kentucky's relationship to all things equine extends far beyond the nature of sport and recreation - it's a cornerstone to the state's unique culture.
If you cross the state line into Kentucky, you'll immediately be welcomed by a big blue sign visually decorated with a horse declaring our "Unbridled Spirit". Perhaps you've been to Louisville and glimpsed Churchill Down's majestic twin spires, home to the Kentucky Derby and the state's annual day in the national spotlight. The city in which I currently dwell, Lexington, is the "Hose Capital of the World". Indeed, the European-held 2010 FEI World Equestrian games are being held in the United States for the first time in its 20-year existence, right here in Lexington.
Outside the University of Kentucky campus and extending beyond the suburban sprawl, the landscape shifts to spacious rolling hills; speckled with barns, separated by wooden fences, and dominated by the horse. The thousands of farms surrounding Lexington, in part, contribute to thriving local economy recognized by Forbes as one of the Top 5 Best Places For Business and Careers.
Despite the stereotypical image Kentucky has garnered over the course of history, many would find themselves consistently surprised at the unique experiences and diverse culture cities like Lexington have to offer. One of those surprises only comes twice a year, once in the Spring when nature is blossoming and once in the Fall when the leaves are turning. At last, today marks the opening day of Keeneland and all of the splendor that comes with it. For an entire month the citizens of Lexington (and Kentucky) will flock to the race course in their finest ties or sundresses; eager to soak up the warm sunlight, crisp Autumn breeze, gorgeous scenery, and live thoroughbred racing. As I head out to enjoy a day full of Kentucky horses, bourbon, and burgoo I leave you with some fine music and an insight into my charming local culture.
