MOG MOG

THE MUSIC BLOGGING NETWORK

I've posted about my favorite moments of Lolla in my The Hold Steady but I have to post about the strangest band I caught there: I'm from Barcelona.

Billed as similar to The Polyphonic Spree, Barcelona did have many, many people on the stage. These people varied from women we decided must be color blind

to a man in a bear suit

to a crazed pizza delivery guy (well, that's what he looked like to me and why I don't let my kids order pizza when I'm not home)

to what had to be Chris Walla's (of Death Cab for Cutie) dark, scary twin

The music, you ask? What was it like? I don't think they are a children's music group, but they could be. The songs were about chicken pox, tree houses, and the Eiffel Tower, all complete with hand motions. I kept expecting Dora the Explorer to pop out and ask "Do you see a creepy guy with a harmonica? ____ Good!!!"

Seeing Dora there wouldn't have surprised me, but what did surprise me was the people in crowd who were into the band and knew all the music. All men. Grown men. Weird. And kinda frightening.

However, the lead singer did have some cool Converse!

Damn, such excellent pictures, Amber!

Look. I know having an off-the-wall is hook is a quick way of drawing attention to one's band, but the shit is getting out of hand. From these guys to Of Montreal to Teddybears (I kinda want to lump Polyphonic Spree here, but I get a sincere vibe from them), I just cannot take it.

I missed being up close for Polyphonic Spree, but they sounded great from the benches under the trees while eating a portabella wrap (well, it _was_ lunch time!). And I get a sincere vibe from them too. This band was just too gimmicky and rather manic. Many Crest whitening strips were used on these people. They all smiled so big and white, it was almost feral. Creepy, I tell you.

Oh, and thanks for the kind words about the pictures....I take hundreds and get a couple of good ones. No talent, just luck and persistance!

I agree, these guys are just too far over the top. I saw their video, and thought it HAD to be a joke. Seriously creepy. PS Last album, Of Montreal were fairly normal. Not sure why the change.

Sounds like big fun. Totally jealous. I love I'm From Barcelona. I think I got their song "We're From Barcelona" a while back. I'm down with it. Check out their dorktacular video.

I'm From Barcelona is a strange lil' ensemble that rather delights me - not certain why. Fabulous photos, and 'cool Converses' indeed. Appreciate the post; loved fistula's 'dorktacular' description. Cheers!
