MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

In my downloads lately, I found a copy of "Losing My Religion" originally by R.E.M (a song, and band that, I figure, Everyone is at least marginally familiar with) covered by Scary Kids Scaring Kids (yeah, another cookie cutter screamo band, but apparently they dig Cap'n Jazz, so they're cool with me). Adding it to my list of songs for a 90's covers mix, I played it for my lady figuring she'd dig it. Which, she did, however, much to my horror, she was unaware it was a cover!! Now, for those of you who dont know me, ie-everyone but puffy, I'm currently living in a teensy podunk redneck town about 2 hours from the nearest town. 2 hours from a slurpee, 2 hours from somewhere to buy socks, yet we still manage 2 local radio stations. Both of which are merely Clear Channel re-broadcasts. They play multiple loop programs of the same handful of "The 80's, 90's and Today". Apparently this has been their format since they appeared here, and this has been the only form of radio available to my girlfriend as she grew up here. Sad state of affairs. Apparently their idea of the 90's doesnt allow for R.E.M (aside from Everybody Hurts, which I hear every day at work) it also doesnt allow for Marcy Playground, Better Than Ezra, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Gin Blossoms, Soul Coughing, or many other 90's altpop radio staples. The 80's gets the same level of shaft, and despite the tagline "80's 90's and Today" the most "Today" we get is Kelly Clarkson and a handful of Sting's more recent stuff... Needless to say, its time to move. I cant help but be disgusted when radio cant even do what its always done a mediocre job of doing: Giving us more than just the top 40, but worse yet, its done lifelessly, with no warm body in the studio to tell us what the hell we're listening to, and I can only assume its because we know, or at least we should, they've been playing the same songs since we were all kids... how dare we want something different, right?

sigh (Steps off his soapbox) Alright... I'm done bitching.

Oh man, that is RUFF. Reminds me of my childhood: 3 tv channels, 2 radio stations (both classic rock from the 60's and 70's... but no rolling stones, only eagles).

It's okay, they can't keep us down man.
