One of my lazy Sunday obsessions is to trawl the online music press for reviews of the upcoming weeks releases. I came across this review at The Skinny a Scottish based music zine.

I read a few other reviews on this album and the majority voiced the same opinions.

A REVIEW OF SEAN LENNONS FRIENDLY FIRE An assured collection of dreamy, melody-driven songs reveals Lennon as the major talent he always threatened to be. Being the son of one of the twentieth century’s musical icons is a famously double-edged sword for Sean Lennon. While he hardly has to say a word to generate buzz around his work, his music will always be compared to his incomparable father’s. After his 1998 debut ‘Into the Sun’, this unfair reception caused Lennon to take a step back from the recording process. Now, eight years on, ‘Friendly Fire’ proves that the wait was worthwhile. An assured collection of dreamy, melody-driven songs reveals Lennon as the major talent he always threatened to be. Yes, there are definite shades of the Beatles throughout, but Lennon’s sensitive lyrics and haunting harmonies bear a more striking resemblance to the late Elliot Smith. Of the ten songs here, there is only one weak exception - Spectacle - to the excellent standard. More than excellent, 'Friendly Fire' is an unassuming masterpiece.

I've heard whispers around MOG from others anticipating this album. My hype, however remains contained. I'm curious, to be honest it's hard not to be when the offspring of a rock icon releases new material, but what I've heard so far from previews online leaves me a long way from sharing the opinions of reviewers like the above.

The video for Friendly Fire is the main instigator of my doubts. See below... before I explain why. Ignore the images and concentrate on the song.

love is like an aeroplane life is just a stage

Two of the most horribly cliched lines possible, and this theme continues through the four tracks i've heard thus far. Lyrically this is awful.

The review above compares Sean to Elliott Smith, a songsmith in the truest form. Musically I don't deny the two's sound and style is not dissimilar, and I have to give props to Sean for stepping out of his dads shadow, and stamping his own seal on these songs. The musical arrangement here is the main plus, and I sincerely hope Sean proves me wrong.

I'll be waiting patiently for the views of those who have purchased the album on its release this coming week. Until then I'll remain in doubt.

EDIT: Wait... It released last week in the US? Okay, lets have your thoughts America, please.

Haven't heard the album yet... and this was the first listening I've given to "Friendly Fire", but I'm not averse to hearing more. This particular song didn't floor me, but it didn't completely turn me off either.

to be continued... ;)
