WHERE MUSIC IS WORTH MORE THAN MONEY

Artist:
Track:

Over the course of the last week, tracks from Nas' upcoming untitled album were slowly distributed one by one to the internet. By the time our clocks struck midnight yesterday, the entire album had found it's way onto your favorite file sharing hideout. The scary thing about this situation is that the album isn't scheduled for release until July 15th, and EVERYONE wants to hear this. Which means his record sales are going to be seriously compromised.

Nas responded to the leak of the album today, and in true Nas fashion his message is short and sweet.

"I'm fucking excited"

I thought he was gonna be pissed.  Cool he's hip to it.  If he was mad, I was gonna rant about how some of these artists have to start recording in studios without internet access.  Nas knows how it goes down now-a-days...

I think after all this time fighting his record label about the title.... he just wanted to get the music in fan's hands. It was originally supposed to come out in December '07.

Album is amazing by the way... I listened to it all last night

I'll have to "find" it somewhere...

I don't see why artists have such a hard time keeping their albums from leaking.  Okay, you have to send a copy to mags for review early.  And then there's always the guy who knows somebody who works for sony and got a copy early.  But, dude, just have some jackass yelling "New Nas album dropping July 15th" over the songs periodically on those copies.

Wait...would that make it a mixtape?

Anywayz, if that hits the internet, fine.  People are still going to want to buy a clean copy.

Once an album goes to the distribution centers/cd pressing plants (usually a couple weeks before the street date)... it's completely out of the label & artists hands.

If i had to put money on what happened... that would be it.

Hmmmm...I guess there's that too.

Damnit, there goes my big job at Sony.

Of course Eminem rushed his last one because it was leaking as he was recording.  You either gotta plug the holes, or just go with it.  Heard it was a miserable album, though.

Eminem's last album was horrible IMO. He's been on a slow decline every since The Marshall Mathers LP ....

But you can attribute a good portion of that to how unstable his life has been (drug abuse, marital problems, etc)

I think a rushed product doesn't help matters (heh..Mathers..) either...

I remember this happened to the Nas album that was released about 5 years ago (sorry, I'm not a huge Nas fan so I forget the title). He ended up scrapping a bunch of tracks that got released and put out a completely different album. It's good to see that now he's come to terms with this happening.

Yeah, I think that was 'It Was Written'.  He ended up scrapping some good tracks though.  I remember being pissed that Wanna Play wasn't on there.

he is such a message inspired artist that I imagine hes just glad his messages are getting out, everyone isnt in the game to cash in, Not to say that he doesnt want to get paid, but sometimes its more the principle than it is the dollar signs.

he has a certain amount of integrity as an artist that even if you cant call yourself a fan, you can respect where he goes with his music.
