MOG MOG

WHERE MUSIC IS WORTH MORE THAN MONEY

Artist:
Album:

I know this album was released last year, but I figured that peeps in Australia might like to check it out to escape the onset of a cold and grey winter. However, if you're on the other side of the world this album could just as easily become your summer jam. Person Pitch evokes 1970’s Big M commercials – hazy memories of bronzed teenagers with sunshine sparkling off their golden hair, and beach balls bobbing gently in the shallows.

If you find the deep exploration of Animal Collective a little too obscure, perhaps this solo album by the Collective's Panda Bear might tickle your fancy instead and change your mind.

Every song is constructed from the most mesmerising array of sampled sounds –owls hoot and streams trickle in the background, F1 racing cars whir like guitars and steam trains link one song to the next. Everything is skilfully blended together to create a psychedelic dreamscape where nothing and everything makes sense.

There’s very little in the way of actual instruments, there aren’t even any beats, as such. But the whole thing is held together by Panda’s reverb-drenched shamanic vocals, which shimmer on the horizon, somewhere behind the sun, begging you to follow him the other side.

"Try to remember always," he sings on the opening track, "just to have a good time."

Every time I listen to this record i have visions of Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides; those glowing snippets of the girls on boats or lounging in country fields. Memories that you’re not sure about anymore. It’s a weird, weird world that Panda Bear lives in, but it’s a beautiful and exotic one.

This is a great album!

And a very well described post...esp this line sums up nicely.

"Everything is skilfully blended together to create a psychedelic dreamscape where nothing and everything makes sense."
