Album: That Lucky Old Sun

Way back last September fellow Mogger JohnUncut was lucky enough to catch Brian Wilson's premier of That Lucky Old Sun, the Beach Boys' first album of new material since the revamped SMiLE, at London's Royal Festival Hall.

For the album, Wilson worked again with SMiLE lyricist Van Dyke Parks and band member Scott Bennett. The album will be released as a deluxe CD/DVD, as a limited edition vinyl, and the usual ways -- digitally and as a single CD. All hitting the U.S. on September 2 and the rest of the world a day sooner.

That Lucky Old Sun tracklist:

1 That Lucky Old Sun 2 Morning Beat 3 That Lucky Old Sun (narrative) 4 Good Kind of Love 5 Forever My Surfer Girl 6 That Lucky Old Sun (narrative) 7 Live Let Live 8 Mexican Girl 09 That Lucky Old Sun (narrative) 10 California Role 11 That Lucky Old Sun (narrative) 12 Oxygen 13 Can't Wait Too Long (vocal excerpt) 14 Midnight's Another Day 15 Going Home 16 Southern California

Wilson is also playing a few shows/ warming up for the new album this summer:

06-28 London, England - English Heritage Picnic Concerts 06-29 Suffolk, England - Ipswich Regent Theatre 07-01 London, England - Royal Albert Hall 07-08 Niagara Falls, Ontario - Niagara Falls Casino Avalon Ballroom 07-09 Ottawa, Ontario - Ottawa Blues Fest 07-12 Highmount, NY - Belleayre Mountain Ski Center 07-13 Hampton Beach, NH - Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom 09-12 Los Angeles, CA - Hollywood Bowl 09-13 Los Angeles, CA - Hollywood Bowl 09-14 Los Angeles, CA - Hollywood Bowl

SMiLE was pretty successful for Wilson. I hope this one isn't a bomber.

I saw both the Smile tour and the Pet Sounds anniversary tour (with Al Jardine guesting) and even though Brian sings off teleprompters -- his shows are far more authentic and rewarding than anything Mike Love does touring as "The Beach Boys."

I too hope the new CD is a success. In retrospect, I hope it is as good as Love & Mercy.

And even more tangential, I saw John Stamos play in a Battle of the Surf Bands in Huntington Beach WAY back in the mid-early 90s. Didn't stick around for him to finish, though.

Nothing against him, but I saw who I came to see - mainly Dick Dale, but also Jan & Dean, The Ventures, and some others. I really need to dig that poster out, so I can remember. :P

Brian Wilson is a genius, and I wish he played that show. Too bad he's not going to be playing anywhere near me any time soon.

I will be buying it for sure. BTW, there is a word of difference between the The Beach Boys' new album and The Beach Boy's new album. Never has the placement of an apostrophe meant so much to so many.... ;-)
