The Grateful Dead perform Wang Dang Doodle with John Popper on harp at the Bill Graham Memorial Concert "Laughter, Love, and Music" in San Francisco, CA 11-3-91

Wang Dang Doodle written by Willie Dixon for Howlin' Wolf at Chess Records in Chicago. Willie Dixon says in his autobiography that of all the songs he wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Wang Dang Doodle" is the one he hated the most. Howling Wolf did not think much of it either, calling it a "levee camp" song.

Dixon had written hundreds of songs for many different artists in the basic blues format at Chess. "Wang Dang Doodle" was written relatively late in his career and by this time Dixon's songwriting had evolved from standard rural blues to a much more sophisticated format. "Wang Dang Doodle", a party song, is an example of his later, much more urban, style with its massive, rolling, exciting beat.

It has been covered by many artists, including Koko Taylor, Ted Nugent, the Pointer Sisters, PJ Harvey, Grateful Dead, Savoy Brown, Charlie Watts, and the Hindu Love Gods. Dixon has also recorded it.

So, on our return to pillage and regain control of the Mog Mothership we found uncertainty and confusion in our midsts, doubters of the power of music to pull it all together, still clinging to the black and white notions that there are dividing lines amongst us. These false notions will be dealt with accordingly.

We also found an unexpected cache in the holds; untold of wealth that could indeed make the much needed and long overdue repairs that were the major cause of the first mutiny. This bounty was no doubt being shipped to the power hungry firms that seek to control our fate, fortunately we have uncovered their plot and infiltrated their ranks. Their end is near. Others could have written this entry more skillfully, but the time is near and my scrawled notes will for now have to suffice...

Ship of Fools - L=SD2

"Fantasy obsessed and deep into the neo-prog scene of the early '90s, few bands were as self-consciously weird and engaging as Ship of Fools."

Aaah, the voice of reason! Of course I don't believe in all the silly boundaries, but they are jump off points for further discussion, when used with care. I am trying to formulate something for the defense of the country and its fore bearers in British Folk, blues, mountain music, etc. Anywhoo, great post..maybe I'll hold my tongue, but knowing me, I won't.

Wouldn't be the same around here if you did, I'm just having a bit of fun with it all. Mountain music, Bluegrass especially, doesn't seem to need much defense, it stands on it's own, Country on the other hand....

Michael posted a kick ass version of The Who's Magic Bus (here) earlier and it got me looking around for other versions or covers if you will...and after listening to this pretty funky kick by The Radiators, the net being what it is, I wandered back into the wild with this great scene...

just been one of those days, hope you're having a funky one :)
